A Set of 4 Chinese Export Silver Candlesticks with Glasgow import marks for the firm of George Edward & Sons, 1899.
The Scottish firm was one of the few UK companies that stocked Chinese and Japanese silver, and pieces with their import mark are specifically targeted by some collectors. There is no Chinese character mark on any of the candlesticks but there is a "95" which was a mark used by some Chinese companies in the nineteenth century to give an indication of the purity of the silver.
When these candlesticks were imported, the firm was run by the founder's son, David and George. David in particular was an admirer of Works of Art from the Far East, and 1901 was associated with the Japanese Department at the International Exhibition in his home city of Glasgow.
